Of course, the American public is getting good at reading mediaspeak. They know, for example, that Cheney’s position on Gitmo doesn’t really make him a conservative at all. A true conservative, having proven himself a loyal vice president, would now officially break with the policies of George W. Bush, whose off the books Iraq War bankrupted the country. Nor would a “conservative” engage in massive bailouts and the printing of trillions of dollars in new paper money, resulting in the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the Republic. No, Bush did not raise taxes, he just dilluted the value of the dollars in our pockets giving billions of his new money to Wall Street bankers. At least Obama will give some of his new monopo;y play money to the lower middle classes through armies of laborers rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure.
Nor is Dick Cheney a moderate on social issues. Cheney made it clear that he will challenge the Evangelical Christian hold on the party and on any and all social issues he will be liberal.
What does all of this mean to the other players in the GOP? For example, will Karl Rove finally have a horse to ride? Insiders say no but Cheney could overrule his own staffers who are telling reporters that Rove is radioactive, with high negatives. Cheney would be exactly Rove’s kind of man, the latter privately insisting to some GOP leaders that the party must shed its relationship with Evangelical Christians. Meanwhile, Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee will presumambly split that vote giving Cheney an opening. At least, that is the scenario painted by Cheney advocates. Where Mitt Romney fits is not stated.
What is impressive is how dramatically Vice President Cheney reemerged in public this past week. He challenged the untouchable, ultra popular President Obama on the very subject that had been his first success. In his first act as president, Barack Obama had signaled his end to the culture of torture by closing Gitmo. Obama received international applause for the decision and the Republicans totally caved on the issue. Yet Dick Cheney, with one well written and well argued speech, won respect and wide coverage for his views. It was the logic and the power of his arguments that thrust him back into the spotlight. It is something seldom seen in modern politics.

This country needs someone who will be strong enough to take on the challenges of whatever comes along whether it be gay marriage, terrorist activities, or monetary troubles.
Since we live in a country where we can speak our minds freely, we also need to keep in mind that we are heavily watched by the outside world.
What we say and do is a reflection of who we are as a nation. We need to let the world see us as a strong nation; one of diversity, yet unified in the thought that we are free men and women who come together to fight for the common good of our people.
There are always those who would just love to step in and take over when we aren’t watching or when we’re so caught up in our own pettiness, that we are unaware of the breakdown in our society. That’s when we can be easily led by “sweet-talker” politicians or worse–some raving lunatic zealots!
Remember the saying, “A nation divided against itself cannot stand.” Keeping this in mind, we have to work together to find the answers to this nation’s problems.
If Dick Cheney can rise to the challenge, I’m all for it! I wouldn’t mind seeing a Cheney/Palin ticket myself! But that seems so far into the future, you’d have to have 3″ thick glasses to envision that and rose-colored ones to boot!

The liberal media will never let your ideals materialize.
If someone defends torture, I don’t see how they can consider themselves a conservative. It also prevents them from ever having credibility in a moral argument. Republicans/conservatives used to embrace and defend civil liberties and the abuse of government over individuals. Somehow, we lost that. Truthfully, Cheney, along with Bush and anyone else involved with torture should be investigated for possible breaking U.S laws that forbid it.
Doug makes some excellent points though that George W. did more harm to our safety, our civil liberties and our financial well being than good. Cheney, I’m afraid was a large part of that.
As for the Gay marriage issue, I think conservatives need to realize we probably don’t want the government to have ANY say so in what marriage is or isn’t. Marriage is between me, my wife and in our case, our God. The state has nothing to do with it. Constitutionally, the Federal government has no authority to rule either way. I’d prefer the states not have a say so either. Conservatives should vote “no” on any attempt to allow same sex marriage, but they should also vote “no” on any measure to define it as only that of a man and a woman. It’s not the government’s job.

Weatherboarding and the other things used at Guantanamo are torture. Cheney has defended the decision to use them. As for the planned attacks, there hasn’t been definitive proof that there any were prevented by it. So, to your both ways point, we have no right to go around telling other countries like China they are mistreating or oppressing their citizens when we practice torture.
We live in a free and open society where the government is prevented from infringing on the rights of individuals. The Constitution is written specifically to prevent us from having martial law conditions. We as citizens should never give up or freedoms in the name of “safety”. The Patriot Act is one of the biggest violations of civil liberties ever. The fact that the FBI, under that law, can write their own search warrants with no judge and then prevent you or anyone served from even mentioning it – even in court – violates multiple items in the bill of rights. So does the wire tapping without warrants. I’m all for the government working to keep us safe, but I expect them to work with in the rules established – especially the Constitution. So, you are right, you can’t have it both ways. Living in an open and free society means we may not be 100% “safe”, but that is a risk we take to avoid having a tyranical government that is able to control too many aspects of our lives, our movement etc.
As conservatives, we also can’t get upset about the size of government if we also condone things like The Patriot Act, the Department of Homeland Security, etc… By the way, you bring up a good point about Congress. They are just as bad about understanding what they have authority to do. If you read article I of the Constitution, there are only 17 things they have authority to do. Many of the laws that are “Congress Approved” are not on that list or violate other portions of that document. Just because they vote on a law doesn’t make it right. I would expect the President to help defend against that.
As for marriage – that’s exactly my point – there should be NO votes. While I personally believe that marriage is something between a man and a woman, I have no desire to give an already over burdening government any latitude into more of my life. Voting on ANY law defining what marriage is effectively gives them that precedent. Again, as you said, we can’t have it both ways. We, as conservatives, can’t complain about the size of government and how they have gotten into our lives and our wallets (Republicans and Democrats) and then turn around and ask them to weigh in on matters they really have no authority to do so.

Personally, I always felt that such manipulation was disingenuous. My family manufactured men’s suits for forty years. We didn’t have to push them on people. The craftsmanship and quality of the materials sold the product. Store buyers only needed to examine them carefully to realize they had a potential winner on their hands. My father and uncles didn’t lower themselves to performing a song and dance for anyone. They essentially told buyers and if they didn’t buy our suits, someone else will and they’ll lose in the end, because our suits are the best. That “take it or leave it” approach worked. It was direct and no-nonsense, just like them. Our suits sold and the rest was history.
So people that rely on wheedling others to get what they want aren’t looked upon too favorably in my world.

I was teaching English to European refugees on an Israeli kibbutz that came under attack. I didn’t ask to be part of any war but I had no choice to participate because my own survival was being threatened as well, along with many innocent men, women, and children. I wasn’t on a safe naval vessel ship firing missiles at unseen targets on land like you. if you dispute the safety of a naval vessel, perhaps you can list the number of US naval vessels that were sunk since 1990.

He was allowed to /able to go to USSR university and study chemistry. He was allowed to (co)-found the bank Menatep (which was “successful” because it paid HIGHER than average rates) in the 1980s. He then leveraged up that money to buy ex Soviet assets for less than a song.

What about Sakharov? Repressed because of his internal exile? Hardly. He even owned a dacha in Zhukovka, next to Brezhnev’s family, and Stalin’s daughter. Another neighbor was Mistislav Rostropovich. This settlement was and is reserved for the most priviledged members of that society. He also is of course the co-developer of the Russian H-bomb. Any repression that may have been visited on Sakharov was due to what he said/did, not due to what he WAS. Sakharov could never stop being Jewish, yet for most of his life, was priviledged, not repressed.
These are just two examples of russian jews who were not repressed among many others. Not being allowed to emigrate? Neither were other russians.
General religious repression, perhaps, but again no singling out just russian jews.
As to the treatment of prominent jewish communists, such as Trotsky, Zinoviev, or Kamenev, that was not due to their religion, but to their political disagreements with Stalin, and not having prevailed there.
The specifically worse treatment of russion jews under the communists, compared to any one else, is a myth.
And, as you do know, or should if you have lived in Israel, many Israelis themselves have their doubts about much of these “refugees” belonging in that society, and their unwillingness to integrate.
