Huckabee for Vice President?

Senator John McCain has not only made no decision regarding his choice for a vice presidential nominee, he has not even decided on speakers at the upcoming Republican National Convention in St. Paul this September.  A McCain source has told me that the Senator is carrying around a closely guarded memo, with different scenarios for the convention.

Last week I had a chance to talk to Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, asking if he would be speaking at the RNC.  Huckabee replied that he had heard nothing from either the Senator or the campaign about any role in St. Paul, Minnesota.  So Huckabee is on hold.

Meanwhile, Evangelical leaders who met Jul 1, 2008 in a private meeting in Denver, Colorado are now circulating a letter in which they ask John McCain to pick Mike Huckabee as his running mate. Said one of the participants, “It may be the only thing McCain can do to energize the Evangelicals for the coming fall campaign.”  Evangelicals are not only needed as voters, but have been the primary activists behind GOP voter registration and turnout in recent presidential elections.

You can read the whole story in an upcoming issue of Newsmax Magazine.

  1. Doug: You rascal, you must have been reading past entries on my blog!

I posited the same scenario months ago, but not to garner the evangelical vote, but because GOP noms traditionally have had to carry the South to win.

I still think swing voters are a larger bloc to attract than evangelicals.

  2. I have been asleep since the GOP primary ended. If he picks my man Huckabee, I’ll wake back up. If not I’ll continue to yawn.

  3. Huckabee can do little compared to what a Mitt Romney could do for McCain’s chances.

It’s about winning, not principles and how much evangelicals feel molly coddled by a candidate.

  4. What can Romney do besides “look good”? he reminds me of our governor in Texas, not bad to look at, but has done nothing but “sell” off Texas! Huckabee would guarantee my vote for McCain, as of now, nothing is sure with me. McCain, himself, will win or lose this November, depending on his nominee for VP. Pray McCain and choose wisely!
