Obama has won the nomination but the cat fight for Vice President may just be beginning.
I’m talking about Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton. Would Pelosi actually quit her position as Speaker to run on the Obama ticket? You bet. And in some respects she would be the perfect solution for him. Her negatives are not as high as Hillary’s, she comes from an even bigger state and she heals the disappointment many woman are going to feel over Hillary’s loss.
But for all her negatives, Hillary Clinton has one big advantage over Nancy Pelosi. Picking Hillary would unite a divided party. That’s why Pelosi is trying to end the process and end the animosity. That’s why she is calling for Hillary Clinton to drop out. It not only scores points with Barack Obama for bringing the contest to an end, it also makes Hillary less needed.
Ironically, the worse the battle between Obama and Clinton becomes, the more bitter, the more negative, the more Obama will need Clinton, all of her negatives notwithstanding. Putting her on his ticket will unite the party. As to the negatives? Polls show that Vice Presidential choices seldom matter anyway.
But would she really accept a second position? Is she really angling for that? Absolutely. In the broad, long view of history, a Clinton, any Clinton, returned to power will wipe out the impeachment. It will be making the statement, “obviously the American people decided that the impeachment was an exercise in politics or they would not have so quickly returned a Clinton to power.” And that will work for both Hillary and Bill and their future, wherever it may lead. Besides, if the Clintons end up moving into the Naval Observatory, the Vice President’s residence, it will still offer her another shot at that other executive residence across town.
This may be her best chance to rise to national power. Make the last few weeks so contentious that only having her on the ticket will solve it. And in November, in spite of all her negatives, she will ride Obama’s popular coattails into power, serve loyally as Vice President, thus erasing the “too ambitious” charges and finally have a shot for herself.
