Why Petraeus and not Clinton?

Okay, since nobody wants to talk about the elephant in the room, I will be the dope and get all the criticism and mention it.  (This is the best part of being over sixty years of age.)  If the national news media, with a straight face, can tell us that the CIA director, General Petraeus, had to resign because he was having an extramarital affair, why didn’t they say the same about President Bill Clinton when he was having an extramarital affair?

Was it….

A.) Because the television executives personally liked Bill Clinton and didn’t want to hurt his feelings and be embarrassed at cocktail parties?

B.) Because they liked his political policies and were afraid they would be setback?

C.) Because they knew about Bill Clinton’s proclivities and were prepared to finesse them if they surfaced but were caught off guard by General Petraeus and so had to report it straight?

D.) Because the president is the boss and what he does in his spare time is his own business?

As far as that goes, if the media is serious about this Petraeus story then why isn’t Bill Clinton being cut out of the daily intelligence briefings even now?  As a former president he still gets them.  As NBC News explained to us on Sunday, such knowledge could have made Petraeus vulnerable, subject to blackmail, and so he had to go.

Well, you say, is there evidence that Bill Clinton is still being indiscreet?  Well, let’s see.  Everybody who is now reading this blog who personally knows of someone who claims to have had a one night stand with Bill Clinton please raise you hands.  Ahaaa.  There you go.  You can put your hands down now.

I’ll put it this way, if a sheltered, modest, born again Christian, like myself knows someone, then odds are Scott Pelly, Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams do too.  (Well, maybe not Brian Williams.)  So how can the news anchors sit there with straight faces and quote poor Petraeus’s line to his best friend, “I messed up.”

Okay.  Let’s be fair.  If he “messed up” then who else messed up?  Have Pelly, Sawyer or Williams had affairs?  Have the producers, the writers, the executives at the news agencies?  Who else in the CIA?  Who on the Senate Intelligence Committee?  Shouldn’t every US Senator and Congressman and member of the White House staff now be rushed into a surprise polygraph test?  This is serious folks. They could be blackmailed.

Bt the way. On the same night that the news reported to us that the head of the CIA has been indiscreet, it also announced a new James Bond movie.  Now James Bond, now there was a spy that nobody could blackmail for being indiscreet.

Love it! Again the media has a double standard. What else is new?!

  2. John Morris says:

You make a good point here. I’ve thought this smelled fishy from the beginning, but couldn’t articulate it. The timing… the double standard. Something is definitely “strange in the neighborhood”…

  3. Kenneth Tremble says:

It is because they do not want the truth to come out what really happened in LIBYA

  4. LuciDMari says:

It’s all to discredit a hero and demoralize the military. He didn’t do anything that millions of others have done since time immemorial. This is just another distraction to forget about the treason committed by this administration while they watched 4 heroes die in real time in the undeclared war in Libya which ended up with our enemies in power, which this administration is now aiding and abetting. And we got four more years of this, people!

  5. Rod Carew says:

The Press just simply does not care for the truth. They would much rather slander & gossip someone into their preconceived corner to justify their report.Jesus had problems with the same attitudes, spins, miss direction,non-relevant commentary, ect from a group in His day called the Pharisees…Our modern day media would have been in good company with that Leftist Group.Recreating and distorting reality in their own imaginations to the harm and detriment of others.Lets see…was that elephant pink ??

  6. Windisea says:

A DISTRACTION away from the only important question we need to have answered first and immediately. “DID COMMANDER IN CHIEF OBAMA WITHHOLD CROSS-BORDER AUTHORITY IN BENGHAZI??” It’s the cornerstone to the entire failure in Benghazi and every event surrounding it and the only question to be asked by journalists. The public should be relentlessly hounding every media outlet in every comment section until they are forced to focus on it. Obtaining the answer to this question will unfold the truth; who, what, when, where and why.

  7. Michael84 says:

I would love to see how they shut down FBI, CIA, NSA, Dep. of Education, Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Health, Housing, Labor, and the equivalent agencies, secretaries and departments on other countries. And, of course, all Central Bank like institution. And the UN. And the NATO. All these things have created a whole lot of new problems, while not having really solved many of the problems that existed when they were created.

  8. usfrog says:

Who knows if there actually is a Petraeus affair? The “scandal” may just have been fabricated so that while the press is talking about the “Petraeus scandal” nobody is thinking of the “Benghazi scandal”. Petraeus will not testify and Obama will hide the fact that the issue is that he’s helping send arms to to Syria. As Paula Broadwell’s father said, there is a much greater story behind all this.
So goes it with Democrats, whether is is Clinton’s affair, Hillary’s lying to the public about “a video”, or Obama smuggling arms into Mexico and possibly Libya, in the end nobody will get punished and they will continue pushing the downhill spiral towards the destrucion of America.

Appreciate your ideas, Doug: This is all so sad… We are heart-broken and worried about our country of origin. Watching for the Hand of God in all this!

  10. Surfisher says:

Doug — silly topic (who cares about such soap opera, when our Nation is reaching a total collapse of ALL liberties and prosperity)?!

Here is a worthy topic, Dear Doug:

***ALL 50 States have started Secession Petitions!***

    http://www.2012presidentialelectionnews.com/2012/11/secession-petitions-growing-at-whitehouse-gov/

Why aren’t you responding to this HISTORICAL Moment, as a Historian, but posting fluff instead?!

    • ___j___ says:

Surfisher, the point of Doug’s post is to explore how deeply controlled the press has become, when famous politicians are involved. Your worry that another 4 years of Obama will be the trigger that causes our nation to reach (as in 100% reach) the total collapse of liberty and prosperity isn’t unfounded, of course — Rand Paul said as much to Wolf Blitzer during the repub natcon back in August, that the reason he feared the re-election of Obama was that we might have a currency collapse due to hyperinflation. Often that leads to martial law, which in turn can lead to dictatorial coup, and totalitarianism.

But it has not happened yet. If we *do* start to see hyperinflation driven by QE3, and by Fed loans under the table to the central banks in Spain and such, then the secession petitions will become relevant, because then millions of people will start to be *serious* about them, instead of just blowing off some anger at the failure of Mitt to beat Obama in 2012. Are there any state-wide petitions… since only individual states can secede… that have even half as many petitions as Romney got votes in that state? If not, then urge to secede isn’t serious, yet.

Just as a case in point, gas prices at the pump are considerably lower now than they have been in a long time. Those of us with suspicious minds might be inclined to think the steady drop in gas-prices was a ploy of the oil companies, who knew that if Obama was re-elected they can count on drone-strikes and Iran and Libya and Syria and Yemen and Gaza and the rest of the oil-rich region staying firmly in the grip of instability… thus boosting oil profits for the next four years… without actually descending into open warfare, which might interfere with supply, or get some of their facilities nationalized, or whatever. But without any hard evidence for this rumor, such as admissible documentary proof of a conspiracy from a whistleblower, or at least circumstantial proof of gasoline profits going through the roof in the next six months, why would I give this rumor any credence, let alone *spread* this as a rumor?

Your link about secession says that, with enough “qualified” signatures, these petitions “will receive an official response from the [Obama] administration” … such as, ummmm, “no thou mayest not”? The state with the most petition-sigs is Texas, which had about 95k. Ron Paul got 175k votes in the repub primaries in Texas, despite only about one voter in ten voting in the primaries, let alone the repub primaries. Gary Johnson got 89k general-election votes in the Texas, and making some estimates from statewide-provisional-ballot-data, weighted according to the Collin County Texas data — which I picked out of a hat because they were the first place to give me the full 2058-page PDF statement of the vote online when I did a search — tells me that Ron Paul probably got between 19k and 27k unauthorized-write-in votes. [But that could be as high as 60k depending on how much cheating we assume occurred… and of course, if you assume the voting machines were compromised at the firmware level, Ron Paul might have gotten millions of votes… sigh.]

Point being, these numbers are *low* in terms of the number of pauliticians in Texas. Not all of them voted in the primary for Ron Paul, and even many of those who *did* figure out the repub-primary-system-process in time to vote for Ron Paul simply stayed home this November, because 90k for Gary plus ~25k for Ron Paul is still *way* lower that the 175k he got in the primary… and *that* number is way lower (perhaps a factor of ten or given the activism among pauliticians maybe only a factor of five) than his support across the state. In other words, if every Ron Paul supporter in Texas signed the secession-petition, then there would be way over a million sigs, not under 100k. More to the point, if even half of the Mitt Romney supporters signed, then the number of sigs on the petition would be way over 2m.

I’m more interested in things like the free-state-project of NH than in the idea that some state might achieve secession. But my main interest is in keeping the focus on remaking the repub party from the inside, since that is our best-case-scenario. If we suffer from >50%-per-year hyperinflation, or see >10 cities fall under martial law, or see >10m people seriously pushing secession, *then* we can change tactics. But until that point, I intend to stick with Ron Paul’s plan, and work on figuring out the innards of the GOP, and work on understanding how to overcome media bias, and so on. Historically, we have doubled our repub-primary-popvote outcome every cycle. If we want to do that again in 2016, without Ron Paul as our champion, we need to buckle down and work hard. But if we do, by 2024 we ought to have liberty once again. Maybe sooner if we try.

p.s. Thanks for the RP farewell-speech video. And thanks for caring about liberty! I disagree with you that the secession idea holds any water, but I’m glad you’re still trying hard. Keep it up.

Yes, Jim, we know you believe Ron Paul is a closet nazi, intent on destroying Israel, and worldwide judaism. You are wrong. But since Mitt did *not* win in 2012, very likely Ron Paul will not run again in 2016, because the liberty-candidate(s) in 2016 won’t need to challenge an incumbent repub president.

What liberty-candidate(s), Jim, *do* you personally support as being a possibility for 2016, without any constraints on how popular they are right now?

Here is a list of oft-mentioned potential candidates, but feel free to add your own. Rand Paul, Gary Johnson, Andrew Napolitano, Jesse Ventura, Marco Rubio, Sarah Palin, Herman Cain, Virgil Goode, Michele Bachmann, Alan Keyes, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, Mike Pence, Mitch Daniels, Bob McDonnell, Tom Woods, Adam Kokesh, Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Donald Trump, Vermin Supreme (not sure what his real name is… the guy who wears the rubber boot on his head and protests outside repub primary polling-places). Which of these do you *approve* of, as liberty-candidates you might vote for in 2016, theoretically?

    • ___j___ says:

My goals in 1976 were the same as they are today: promote peace & prosperity through a strict adherence to individual liberty. the course the U.S. embarked on in the latter half of the 20th century would bring us a major financial crisis, engulf us in a foreign policy that would overextend us and undermine our national security, to achieve my goals, the government would have to shrink in size and scope, reduce spending, change the monetary system, and reduce the unsustainable costs of policing the world and expanding the american empire. the problems seemed to be overwhelming, and impossible to solve, but from my viewpoint, just following the constraints placed on the federal government by the Constitution would have been a good place to start. in spite of my efforts, the government has grown exponentially, taxes remain prohibitive, and the profliglate increase of incomprehensible regulation continues. Wars are constant and are pursued without congressional declaration, deficits rise to the sky, poverty is rampant, and dependency on the fed govt is now worse than any time in our history. All this, with minimal concerne for the deficits and unfunded liabilities that common sense tells us cannot go on much longer. A grand, but bi-partisan, agreement that is never mentioned keeps the spending going. One side doesn’t give up a penny on military spending, the other side doesn’t give up a penny on welfare spending, and both sides continue to support the bailouts and the subsidies for the banking and the corporate elite. …

Why does a change in administration never result in a change of policy? Could it be that the views of both parties are essentially the same? … How can politicians defend free markets, but not civil liberties? How can politicians defend civil liberties, but not free markets? Aren’t they the same? Why can’t we defend both economic liberties and personal liberties? … Aggression, and the forced redistribution of wealth, has nothing to do with the teachings of the world’s great religions. … Why is democracy held in such high esteem, when it is the enemy of the minority? … The answers are to be found in more liberty. … We should have more trust in ourselves — less in the government. … Many americans are now demanding to hear the plain truth of things. …. Believers in military keynesianism and domestic keynesianism desparately continue to support their failed policies, while the economy delves into a deeper slumber. … Humanitarian arguments are always used to justify government mandates …

Government in a free society should have no authority to meddle in the social activities or the economic transactions of individuals, nor should government meddle in the affairs of other nations. … If one seeks liberty, a precise type of government is required … Sacrificing a little liberty, for imaginary safety, always ends badly. … The financial crisis is actually a moral crisis. Ultimately the people have to decide what kind of government they want. … Too many people believe government handouts are free … that deception is coming to an end. … Our Constitution, which was intended to limit government power and abuse, has failed. The founders warned that a free society depends on a virtuous and moral people. The current crisis confirms that their fears were justified. … The Constitution has not prevented the people from demanding handouts for both rich and poor. … All branches of our government are controlled today by individuals who use their power to undermine liberty, and enhance the welfare- and warfare-state, plus frequently their own wealth and power. … Tinkering with thousands of pages of new laws will do nothing to solve the problem. … Reversing a downward spiral depends on accepting a new approach. …

What are the greatest dangers that the american people face today that impede the goal of a free society? #1 continual attack on our civil liberties, #2 violent anti-americanism that has engulfed the world because of the phenomenon of blowback, #3 the ease with which we go to war without a declaration by congress, #4 a financial-political crisis (the danger of central economic planning by the Federal reserve) as a consequence of excessive debt / unfunded liabilities / spending / bailouts / and gross discrepancy in wealth redistribution going from the middle class to the rich, #5 world government taking over local and U.S. sovereignty. Happily, there is an answer for these very dangerous trends: what a wonderful world it would be if everyone accepted the simple moral premise of rejecting all acts of aggression! …

The reality dictates we [must now] try liberty. … The ultimate solution is not in the hands of the government… The number one responsibility for each of us is to change ourselves with hope that others will follow. This is of greater importance than working on changing the government. … Virtue and morality of the people allow liberty to flourish. … Envy (economic interventionists) and intolerance (social interventionists) must be overcome. … Tolerance is not an endorsement of an activity! … Both sides use force — both sides are authoritarians — both views ought to be rejected. … When tried, freedom is popular. … The best chance for achieving peace and prosperity for the maximum number of people worldwide is to pursue the cause of liberty. If you find this to be a worthwhile message, spread it throughout the land.

Secession Is an American Principle!(Ron Paul states it logically in the 4 minute video shown at the end)!
    —————————————————-

It is not a question of IF, but WHEN, a State will secede!
And the first viable State to secede will garner the most benefits (with the next States getting a bit less).

    The benefits of Secession are:

    1) The First State (that has a balanced budget) — let us say it’s Texas — will attract all freedom loving Americans. We will move lock-stock-and-barrel in the Millions to Texas in order to escape the impending Doom that is the Welfare-and-Military Tyranny that’s now known as the Washing DC Federal Government.
Meaning, Texas, will have an influx of Liberty minded people, the REAL Americans, that are the producers, and not the takers.

    2) All GUN-TOTING Federal Agencies will cease to exist in Texas (and that will apply to all other States that eventually secede, equally)!

No more of these PERNICIOUS Creations of a Government that IS NOW Against the People (and not For the People and Of the People, as our Original Constitution decreed)!

The alphabet soup of these Federal Agencies was created not to protect us, We The People, but to belittle us, to condition us to obedience, to take away our rights and our individual sovereignty over body soul and private property, to rob us of our income, to give us Promissory Paper Notes and beguile us that that is real money, to tax just about anything and all that we earn or purchase, to take money away even when we are dead (picking a dead man’s pockets Tax), to pay tax on our private property that we own and have developed and improved, to force people without children to pay School Tax, to tell us that to travel is not a right but a “privilege” (drivers license “laws”), to tag us like cattle with a Number (SSN), to intrude so far into our private lives and homes as to tell us how much water we can use to flush down our poop in our toilets, to invade our sanctity as sovereign and free individuals to perpetrate invasive bodily searches at airports, to…and the sad list of our subjugation by GUN TOTING FEDERAL AGENTS goes on, and on, and on….

Any State that secedes will be rid IMMEDIATELY of ALL these anti-American PERNICIOUS Federal Organizations!
    ——————————————————-

    Here is MSN latest report:

The Texas petition says the United States is suffering from economic troubles stemming from the federal government’s failure to reform spending. It also complains of alleged rights abuses committed by agencies like the Transportation Security Administration.

“Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union,” it said.

Wow..Surfisher spent most of the primaries denying that Dear Leader is a neoconfederate. Now that 99.8% of American voters have seen through the lies she posts some good old neoconfederate rhetroic along with a video of the biggest neoconfederate/crypto-Nazi alive, Dr. Ronald Ernie Paul.

      • ___j___ says:

  19. Surfisher says:

Ron Paul — Secession Is an American Principle!

      My Take:

The District of Columbia (Washington, DC) — where the White House and all Federal Governmental Agencies reside — have passed the point by their anti-American-anti-Constitution ACTIVITIES that they have FORFEITED THE RIGHT to be called the USA. De facto, THEY have already SECEDED from the Union by constitutional default, and any State that wants to secede from THEM is a State that wants to RETURN BACK to the original CONSTITUTIONAL USA!

      • Jim says:

” Translation: The Liberty movement should shoot itself in the foot by torpedoing Paul’s chances in 2016.Multiple Republican governors have issued statements rejecting the laughable “secession” movement, including Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Let’s further alienate Paul from the GOP by spreading this video that PROVES he is nothing but a Dixie-whistling, cousin loving neoconfederate.

  21. Surfisher says:

Is all the recent talk of secession mere sour grapes over the election, or perhaps something deeper? Currently there are active petitions in support of secession for all 50 states, with Texas taking the lead in number of signatures. Texas has well over the number of signatures needed to generate a response from the administration, and while I wouldn’t hold my breath on Texas actually seceding, I believe these petitions raise a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union.

Is it treasonous to want to secede from the United States? Many think the question of secession was settled by our Civil War. On the contrary; the principles of self-governance and voluntary association are at the core of our founding. Clearly Thomas Jefferson believed secession was proper, albeit as a last resort. Writing to William Giles in 1825, he concluded that states:

“should separate from our companions only when the sole alternatives left, are the dissolution of our Union with them, or submission to a government without limitation of powers.”

Keep in mind that the first and third paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence expressly contemplate the dissolution of a political union when the underlying government becomes tyrannical.

Do we have a “government without limitation of powers” yet? The Federal government kept the Union together through violence and force in the Civil War, but did might really make right?

Secession is a deeply American principle. This country was born through secession. Some felt it was treasonous to secede from England, but those “traitors” became our country’s greatest patriots.

There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents. That is what our Revolutionary War was all about and today our own federal government is vastly overstepping its constitutional bounds with no signs of reform. In fact, the recent election only further entrenched the status quo. If the possibility of secession is completely off the table there is nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties and no recourse for those who are sick and tired of it.

Consider the ballot measures that passed in Colorado and Washington state regarding marijuana laws. The people in those states have clearly indicated that they are ready to try something different where drug policy is concerned, yet they will still face a tremendous threat from the federal government. In California, the Feds have been arresting peaceful medical marijuana users and raiding dispensaries that state and local governments have sanctioned. This shouldn’t happen in a free country.

It remains to be seen what will happen in states that are refusing to comply with the deeply unpopular mandates of Obamacare by not setting up healthcare exchanges. It appears the Federal government will not respect those decisions either.

In a free country, governments derive their power from the consent of the governed. When the people have very clearly withdrawn their consent for a law, the discussion should be over. If the Feds refuse to accept that and continue to run roughshod over the people, at what point do we acknowledge that that is not freedom anymore? At what point should the people dissolve the political bands which have connected them with an increasingly tyrannical and oppressive federal government? And if people or states are not free to leave the United States as a last resort, can they really think of themselves as free?

If a people cannot secede from an oppressive government, they cannot truly be considered free.

  22. Jim says:

WAY TO GO SURFISHER! Spread this like ‘the horse manure it is” so by time the mainstream media (don’t forget Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert) are through with him he’ll get laughed off the House floor before January 2nd rolls around:

‘In a gift to those who enjoyed Lincoln last weekend, on Monday Ron Paul offered up a real-world sequel of sorts in a blog post to his House website…
Paul argues that this outcry from roughly .22 percent of the American public raises “a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union,” despite what your history teacher might have told you about the Civil War….
If the American people can’t secede, how will they ever be able to stop the officials (like Rand and Crazy Uncle Liberty) they keep voting for in regularly scheduled elections?’

    http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/11/ron-paul-says-america-should-let-states-secede.html?mid=google

My advice to Doug is either put a muzzle on the old coot or disavow your support for him. At this rate you’ll never be taken seriously as a historian ever again in the United States (not as tho you aren’t already hanging on a thread for sharing a stage in August with self-described “just plain old confederate REVISIONIST” Lew Rockwell and slavery advocate Walter Block).

Surfisher keep spreading this painfully embarrassing diatribe “like wildfire.” It gives the rest of us (99.88%) something to laugh at.

Ron Paul Is ‘Deeply’ Wrong About Secession

“Just because an election doesn’t go the way you would like, you don’t get to take your state and go stomping home, even if you try to cloak your dislike for current policy in principled talk about “vast” impingements on “constitutional bounds.” But there’s a distinct difference between wanting to elect a new government and trying to dissolve the country—the latter is, in fact, both treasonous and unpatriotic….
Secession is a deeply un-American principle. It is a principle that posed the greatest existential threat to the United States of America and was vanquished by our greatest president.”

  30. Surfisher says:

*I Dreamt of Free America* (a friend of mine that escaped the Soviet Block in 1968 asked me to post this for him):

“I lived in a Communist Country that was totalitarian. In the morning I woke up to TV news that told me how great our Socialist Government was, then read the same in their newspapers, while waiting in line for bread. I was then 16 years old.

My parents went to work before the break of dawn, and came home exhausted each day after 7pm. The meager dinners we had were the best of times — my parents taught me not to believe the lies the communists told, but to dream that there is a truly FREE COUNTRY called America, where we’ll all try to escape to someday!

School I hated — it was six days a week back then — and all they taught us was how great our socialist leaders were, and how wonderful the world would be once Communism is achieved.

Every other Sunday, my parents and I (just like all our neighbors) had to attend in a basement the local Commissar’s mandatory gathering. Here, all had to pledge allegiance to our Socialist Republic, and have us tell on neighbors and friends who might be an Enemy of the State. The Commissar always made a patriotic call that ANY CHILDREN, that have seen or heard, their parents say something against the State MUST report them, since that is how our country would be saved from internal foes.

I’m sadden to recall that there were a few children that reported their own parents (these children did get an extra allowance of candy, AND THE RARE Chocolate bar…and we envied them, since Chocolate was an unheard of luxury back then), but next time we never saw their parents….

But I loved my parents and respected them — and no Chocolate bar could ever replace them.

We did escape in 1968 — and came to Freedom, the Greatest Country in the World back then, the USA!

My parents died in the 1980’s, and I no longer mourn them — because I’m happy they did not live to see what this nation has become!”

“Right now our USA is no different than the communist country I escaped from over 40 years ago!

Please, do not let my tale die with me.”

    Maddow Blog

Secession is not ‘a deeply American principle’
“I suppose it’s inevitable during times of intense ideological strife that, once an election season ends, those dissatisfied with the results will react with excessive rhetoric. It’s not uncommon, for example, to hear isolated voices talk about moving to another country, rather than suffering through four years of elected leaders they disapprove of.

But casual talk about secession — from elected officials, no less — is more disconcerting. In Ron Paul’s case, there’s nothing especially “American” about breaking up America. It happened that one time, and if memory serves, the results were fairly devastating.”

    Ron Paul hitches his wagon
““No state, however frustrated some of its citizens may be with the present state of government in America, is going to be able to leave the Union and go its own way. That is one of the most firmly settled issues on the meaning of the Constitution,” Constitution Daily contributor Lyle Denniston said.

In 1869, the Supreme Court ruled, in the case of Texas v. White, the only conjectural conduit to secession is a constitutional amendment. That position was affirmed in 2006 by Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who wrote, “If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede.” Hence, in the Pledge of Allegiance, “one Nation, indivisible.”

    The NeoConfederate Agenda:

Economics — neo-Confederates usually advocate a free market economy which engages in significantly less taxation than currently found in the United States, and which does not revolve around fiat currencies such as the United States Dollar.[2]

History — many neo-Confederates are openly critical of the presidency of Abraham Lincoln to varied degrees, and of the history of Reconstruction. Various authors have written critiques of Lincoln and the Union. Slavery is almost never defended, but it is usually denied as a primary cause of the American Civil War. Critics often accuse Neo-Confederates of “revisionism” and of acting as “apologists”.[3]

The Civil Rights Movement — Neo-Confederates used the history of the Confederacy to justify their opposition to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.[4] Historian David Blight writes that current neo-Confederates are “ driven largely by the desire of current white supremacists to re-legitimize the Confederacy, while they tacitly reject the victories of the modern civil rights movement.[5]

Culture — many neo-Confederates promote an unabashed Christian culture. They support, for example, public displays of Christianity, such as “Ten Commandments” monuments and displays of the Christian cross.[6] Almost all Neo-Confederates strongly support the right to keep and bear arms, present in both the United States Constitution and the Confederate States Constitution. Generally they oppose unmitigated illegal immigration of foreign nationals into Southern states.[7] Some Neo-Confederates view the Civil War as a conflict between a secular North and a Christian South.[8] Certain Neo-Confederates believe in an Anglo-Celtic identity theory for residents of the South.[9]

Secession — many neo-Confederates openly advocate the resecession of the Southern states and territories which comprised the old Confederate States of America. The League of the South, for example, promotes the “independence of the Southern people” from the “American empire”.[2] Most neo-Confederate groups do not seek violent revolution, but rather an orderly separation, such as was done in the division of Czechoslovakia.[citation needed] Many Neo-Confederate groups have prepared for what they view as a possible collapse of the federal United States into its 50 separate states, much like the Soviet Union collapsed, and believe the Confederacy can be resurrected at that time.

Neo-Confederacy also incorporates advocacy of traditional gender roles, is hostile towards democracy, strongly opposes homosexuality, and exhibits an understanding of race that favors segregation and suggests white supremacy. In many cases, neo-Confederates are openly secessionist. Overall, it is a reactionary conservative ideology that has made inroads into the Republican Party from the political right, and overlaps with the views of white nationalists and other more radical extremist groups.

Differing from similar formats, the plaintiffs and defendants were represented “pro bono” by famous attorneys. The show ran in syndication during the 2000–2001 season.

From 2006 to 2010, Napolitano co-hosted a talk radio show on Fox News Radio with Brian Kilmeade titled Brian and the Judge.

  53. Jim says:

Judith Sheindlin, better known as Judge Judy (born October 21, 1942), is an American lawyer, judge, television personality, and author. Since 1996, Sheindlin has presided over her own syndicated reality courtroom show, Judge Judy.

Sheindlin passed the New York Bar Exam in 1965, the same year as her graduation, and was hired as a corporate lawyer for a cosmetics firm.Within two years she became dissatisfied with her job and left to raise her two children. She was soon made aware of a position in the New York court system as a prosecutor in the family courts. In her role as a lawyer, Sheindlin prosecuted child abuse cases, domestic violence, and juvenile crime.

By 1982 Sheindlin’s no-nonsense attitude inspired New York Mayor, Ed Koch, to appoint her as a judge in criminal court. Four years later, she was promoted to supervising judge in the Manhattan division of the family court. She earned a reputation as a “tough” judge (though she disagrees with the labels “tough” and “harsh”), known for her fast decision-making and acerbic wit.

In February 1993 Sheindlin’s outspoken reputation made her the subject of a Los Angeles Times article, profiling her as a woman determined to make the court system work for the common good. She subsequently was featured in a segment on CBS’s 60 Minutes, bringing her national recognition. This led to her first book, Don’t Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It’s Raining, published in 1996. She retired as a family court judge that same year after hearing over 20,000 cases. After her retirement, Sheindlin continued to receive increasing amounts of public attention.
Not long after her retirement in 1996, Sheindlin was approached about possibly starring in a new reality court show, featuring “real cases with real rulings.” She accepted the offer.

Sheindlin’s syndicated courtroom series, Judge Judy, debuted on September 16, 1996. It wasn’t long after the show’s debut that it became a success, making Sheindlin a celebrity, well known as a no-nonsense fact-finder, incisive decision-maker, and overall strict adjudicator. The program has been the number one court show since its debut, reportedly the only original show on television to increase its ratings yearly, and has integrated itself into American pop culture.

The show’s ratings have been very high, reportedly averaging approximately 10 million viewers daily. It is especially popular among female viewers between the ages of 25 and 54. Author Brendan I. Koerner commented in regard to the popularity of Judge Judy:

    cont:
Court-show viewers don’t seem to want moral conundrums or technical wrinkles. They love Sheindlin’s show because she offers them a fantasy of how they’d like the justice system to operate—swiftly, and without procedural mishaps or uppity lawyers. They get to see wrongdoers publicly humiliated by a strong authority figure. There is no uncertainty after Sheindlin renders her verdict and bounds off the bench, and there certainly are no lengthy appeals.

During the 2009-2010 season, Judge Judy became the first show in a decade to score a higher number of daytime viewers than The Oprah Winfrey Show. In May 2011, as a result of continued high ratings, CBS Television Distribution announced that the show’s contract was EXTENDED to 2015 (Judge Nap’s court room show has been long cancelled).

As a result of her stardom, she served as a judge for the 1999 Miss America Pageant. In December 2009 Sheindlin told the story of her life and career in Family Court, as well as Judge Judy and her published works in a two-hour interview for the Archive of American Television.

*Blind Support of Israel Leads to Unexpected Consequences*

by Ron Paul (undeniably the Greatest American of the 21st Century):

“As of late Friday the ceasefire in Gaza seems to be holding, if tentatively. While we should be pleased that this round of fighting appears temporarily on hold, we must realize that without changes in U.S. foreign policy it is only a matter of time before the killing begins again.

It feels like 2009 all over again which is the last time this kind of violence broke out in Gaza. At that time over 1400 Palestinians were killed of which just 235 were combatants. The Israelis lost 13 of which 10 were combatants. At that time I said of then-President Bush’s role in the conflict:

It’s our money and our weapons but I think we encouraged it. Certainly the President has said nothing to diminish it. As a matter of fact, he justifies it on moral grounds saying “Oh, they have a right to do this” without ever mentioning the tragedy of Gaza. To me, I look at it like a concentration camp.

The U.S. role has not changed under the Obama administration. The same mistakes continue, as journalist Glenn Greenwald said last week. For years now U.S. financial, military and diplomatic support of Israel has been the central enabling force driving this endless conflict. The bombs Israel drops on the Gazans, and the planes that they use to drop them, and the weapons they use to occupy the West Bank and protect settlements are paid for, in substantial part, by the U.S. taxpayer.

Last week, as the fighting raged, President Obama raced to express U.S. support for the Israeli side in a statement that perfectly exemplifies the tragic comedy of U.S. foreign policy. He said, “No country on earth would tolerate rockets raining down on its citizens from outside its borders. Considering that this president rains down missiles on Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan and numerous other countries on a daily basis, the statement was so hypocritical that it didn’t pass the laugh test, and it wasn’t funny.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton traveled to Tel Aviv to meet with Israeli Prime minister Netanyahu, but she refused to meet with the elected Palestinian leaders. Clinton said upon arrival in Israel, “America’s commitment to Israel’s security is rock-solid and unwavering.” Does this sound like an honest broker?

At the same time, Congress acted with similar ignobility when an unannounced resolution was brought to the House floor after the business of the week had been finished, and in less than 30 seconds the resolution was passed by unanimous consent without debate and without most representatives even having heard of it. The resolution H.Res. 813 was so one-sided it is not surprising they didn’t want anyone to have the chance to read and vote on it. Surely at least a handful of my colleagues would have objected to language like:

The House of Representatives expresses unwavering commitment to the security of the state of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state with secure borders.

U.S. foreign policy being so one-sided actually results in more loss of life and of security on both sides. Surely Israelis do not enjoy the threat of missiles from Gaza, nor do the Palestinians enjoy their Israeli-imposed inhumane conditions in Gaza.

As long as Israel can count on its destructive policies being underwritten by the U.S. taxpayer it can continue to engage in reckless behavior, and as long as the Palestinians feel the one-sided U.S. policy lined up against them, they will continue to resort to more and more deadly and desperate measures.

Continuing to rain down missiles on so many increasingly resentful nations, the U.S. is undermining rather than furthering its security. We are on a collision course with much of the rest of the world if we do not right our foreign policy. Ending interventionism in the Middle East and replacing it with friendship and even-handedness would be a welcome first step.”

  75. Windisea says:

    Rep. Ron Paul

Mr. Chairman, I rise today in opposition to the Child Protection and Sexual Predator Punishment Act of 1998. This bill, if passed, will further expand the authority of this country’s national police force and further “justify” the federal Justice Department’s intrusion into mail, telephone and Internet communications.

Mr. Chairman, today the Congress will collectively move our nation yet another step closer to a national police state by further expanding the notion of federal crimes and paving the way for a deluge of federal criminal justice activity. Of course, it is much easier to ride the current wave of federally “criminalizing” all human malfeasance in the name of saving the world from some evil than to uphold a Constitutional oath which prescribes a process by which the nation is protected from what is perhaps the worst evil, totalitarianism. Who, after all, and especially in an election year, wants to be amongst those members of Congress who are portrayed as soft on child-related sexual crime irrespective of the procedural transgressions and individual or civil liberties one tramples in their zealous approach.

In the name of the politically popular cause of protecting children against sex crimes, the Members of Congress will vote on whether to move the Nation further down the path of centralized-Government implosion by appropriating yet more Federal taxpayer money and brandishing more U.S. prosecutors at whatever problem happens to be brought to the floor by any Members of Congress hoping to gain political favor with those embracing some politically popular cause. The Child Protection and Sexual Predator Punishment Act of 1998 is no exception.

Who, after all, can stand on the house floor and oppose a bill which is argued to make the world safer for children with respect to crimes? It is a sad commentary when members of this body only embrace or even mention federalism when it serves their own political purposes and, at the same time, consciously ignore federalism’s implications for these politically popular causes. It seems to no longer even matter whether governmental programs actually accomplish their intended goals or have any realistic hope of solving problems. No longer does the end even justify the means. All that now seems to matter is that Congress pass a new law.

Crimes committed against children (as well as adults) are a problem that should concern all Americans. As a doctor of obstetrics I have enjoyed the privilege of bringing more than 3,000 new lives into the world. I know there are few things more tragic than crimes committed against young people. In fact, the types of crimes this bill attempts to federally punish are among the most despicable criminal acts committed. Undoubtedly, strong measures and penalties need to be imposed to deter and punish these criminal actors. Nevertheless, the threshold question in Congress must always be: “under what authority do we act?” Should we cease to concern ourselves about the Constitution in all that we do and moved by emotion speak only of vague theoretical outcomes?

Any federal usurpation of criminal law, no matter how flexible, violates the 10th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The 10th amendment limits the Federal Government to those functions explicitly enumerated in the Constitution. Other than in these few areas, the States are sovereign. Therefore the Federal Government has no authority to federalize crimes whether committed against children, women, or some specific race. Additionally, ours is an individual Bill of Rights rather than a system of rights dependent upon to which group (gender, race, or age) one happens to belong.

The drafters of the Bill of Rights knew quite well that it would be impossible for a central government to successfully manage crime prevention programs for as large and diverse a country as America. The founders also understood that centralized federal involvement in crime prevention and control was dangerous and would lead to a loss of precious liberty. The bill’s implication of federal monitoring of conversation on phone lines, the Internet, and U.S. mail is frightening and opens the door to unlimited government snooping.

Some will argue that federal legislation is necessary because communications cross state lines. Fortunately, the Constitution provides for the procedural means for preserving the integrity of state sovereignty over those issues delegated to it via the tenth amendment. The privilege and immunities clause as well as full faith and credit clause allow states to exact judgments from those who violate their state laws. The Constitution even allows the federal government to legislatively preserve the procedural mechanisms which allow states to enforce their substantive laws without the federal government imposing its substantive edicts on the states. Article IV, Section 2, Clause 2 makes provision for the rendition of fugitives from one state to another and in 1783 Congress passed an act which did exactly this.

I too find most despicable the criminal acts this bill attempts to make federal crimes, but under the U.S. Constitution criminal law jurisdiction lies with the States. This is why I oppose yet another step toward a national police state. And because I fear the bill’s implications regarding federal monitoring of voice, mail and data communications, I cannot support H.R. 3494.

Ron: Then why central banks hold it (gold)?
Shalom: Aah…it (gold) is called reserves.

    Partial Transcript:

“…A government out of control, unrestrained by the constitution, the rule of law or morality. Bickering over petty politics as we descend into chaos. The philosophy that destroys us is not even defined.

We have broken from reality a psychotic nation. Ignorance with a pretense of knowledge replacing wisdom. Money does not grow on trees, nor does prosperity come from a government printing press or escalating deficits.

We are now in the midst of unlimited spending of the people’s money. Exorbitant taxation, deficits of trillions of dollars spent on a failed welfare-warfare system. An epidemic of cronyism. Unlimited supplies of paper money equated with wealth. A central bank that deliberately destroys the value of the currency in secrecy, without restraint, without nary a whimper, yet cheered on by the pseudo-capitalists of Wall Street, the military-industrial complex, and Detroit.

We police our world empire with troops on 700 bases and in 130 countries around the world. A dangerous war now spreads throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. Thousands of innocent people being killed as we become known as the torturers of the 21st century.

We assume that by keeping the already known torture pictures from the public’s eye, we will be remembered only as a generous and good people. If our enemies want to attack us only because we are free and rich, proof of torture would be irrelevant.

The sad part of all this is that we have forgotten what made America great, good and prosperous. We need to quickly refresh our memories and once again reinvigorate our love, understanding and confidence in liberty.

The status quo cannot be maintained considering the current conditions. Violence and lost liberty will result without some revolutionary thinking. We must escape from the madness of crowds now gathering.

The good news is that reversal is achievable through peaceful and intellectual means, and fortunately the number of those who care are growing exponentially….”

    by Ron Paul:

The senseless and horrific killings last week in Newtown, Connecticut reminded us that a determined individual or group of individuals can cause great harm no matter what laws are in place. Connecticut already has restrictive gun laws relative to other states, including restrictions on fully automatic, so-called “assault” rifles and gun-free zones.

Predictably, the political left responded to the tragedy with emotional calls for increased gun control. This is understandable, but misguided. The impulse to have government “do something” to protect us in the wake national tragedies is reflexive and often well intentioned. Many Americans believe that if we simply pass the right laws, future horrors like the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting can be prevented. But this impulse ignores the self evident truth that criminals don’t obey laws.

The political right, unfortunately, has fallen into the same trap in its calls for quick legislative solutions to gun violence. If only we put armed police or armed teachers in schools, we’re told, would-be school shooters will be dissuaded or stopped.

While I certainly agree that more guns equals less crime and that private gun ownership prevents many shootings, I don’t agree that conservatives and libertarians should view government legislation, especially at the federal level, as the solution to violence. Real change can happen only when we commit ourselves to rebuilding civil society in America, meaning a society based on family, religion, civic and social institutions, and peaceful cooperation through markets. We cannot reverse decades of moral and intellectual decline by snapping our fingers and passing laws.

Let’s not forget that our own government policies often undermine civil society, cheapen life, and encourage immorality. The president and other government officials denounce school violence, yet still advocate for endless undeclared wars abroad and easy abortion at home. U.S. drone strikes kill thousands, but nobody in America holds vigils or devotes much news coverage to those victims, many of which are children, albeit, of a different color.

Obviously I don’t want to conflate complex issues of foreign policy and war with the Sandy Hook shooting, but it is important to make the broader point that our federal government has zero moral authority to legislate against violence.

Furthermore, do we really want to live in a world of police checkpoints, surveillance cameras, metal detectors, X-ray scanners, and warrantless physical searches? We see this culture in our airports: witness the shabby spectacle of once proud, happy Americans shuffling through long lines while uniformed TSA agents bark orders. This is the world of government provided “security,” a world far too many Americans now seem to accept or even endorse. School shootings, no matter how horrific, do not justify creating an Orwellian surveillance state in America.

Do we really believe government can provide total security? Do we want to involuntarily commit every disaffected, disturbed, or alienated person who fantasizes about violence? Or can we accept that liberty is more important than the illusion of state-provided security? Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens’ lives. We shouldn’t settle for substituting one type of violence for another. Government role is to protect liberty, not to pursue unobtainable safety.

Our freedoms as Americans preceded gun control laws, the TSA, or the Department of Homeland Security. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference, not by safety. It is easy to clamor for government security when terrible things happen; but liberty is given true meaning when we support it without exception, and we will be safer for it.

Ron Paul: “I Have Always Voted against the NDAA Regardless of What Party Controls the House.”

    By Ron Paul, December 2012:

“”Mr. Speaker, I rise to oppose what will be the final National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) I will face as a Member of the US House of Representatives. As many of my colleagues are aware, I have always voted against the NDAA regardless of what party controls the House. Far from simply providing an authorization for the money needed to defend this country, which I of course support, this authorization and its many predecessors have long been used to fuel militarization, enrich the military industrial complex, expand our empire overseas, and purchase military and other enormously expensive equipment that we do not need and in large part does not work anyway. They wrap all of this mess up in false patriotism, implying that Members who do not vote for these boondoggles do not love their country.

The military industrial complex is a jigsaw puzzle of seemingly competing private companies; but they are in reality state-sponsored enterprises where well-connected lobbyists, usually after long and prosperous careers in the military or government, pressure Congress to fund pet projects regardless of whether we can afford them or whether they are needed to defend our country. This convenient arrangement is the welfare of the warfare state.

Because of the false perception that we must pass this military spending authorization each year or our men and women in uniform will go hungry, Congress has over the years taken the opportunity to pack it with other items that would have been difficult to pass on their own. This is nothing new on Capitol Hill. In the last few years, however, this practice has taken a sinister turn.

The now-infamous NDAA for fiscal year 2012, passed last year, granted the president the authority to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge, without access to an attorney, and without trial. It is difficult to imagine anything more un-American than this attack on our Constitutional protections. While we may not have yet seen the widespread use of this unspeakably evil measure, a wider application of this “authority” may only be a matter of time.

Historically these kinds of measures have been used to bolster state power at the expense of unpopular scapegoats. The Jewish citizens of 1930s Germany knew all about this reprehensible practice. Lately the scapegoats have been mostly Muslims. Hundreds, perhaps many more, even Americans, have been held by the US at Guantanamo and in other secret prisons around the world.

But this can all change quickly, which makes it all the more dangerous. Maybe one day it will be Christians, gun-owners, home-schoolers, etc.

That is why last year, along with Reps. Justin Amash, Walter Jones, and others, we attempted to simply remove the language from the NDAA (sec. 1021) that gave the president this unconstitutional authority. It was a simple, readable amendment. Others tried to thwart our straightforward efforts by crafting elaborately worded amendments that in practice did noting to protect us from this measure in the bill. Likewise this year there were a few celebrated but mostly meaningless attempts to address this issue. One such effort passed in the senate version of this bill. The conferees have simply cut it out. The will of Congress was thus ignored by a small group of Members and Senators named by House and Senate leadership.

There are many other measures in this NDAA Conference Report to be concerned about. It continues to fund our disastrous wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and elsewhere for example.

The Conference Report contains yet another round of doomed-to-fail new sanctions against Iran. These are acts of war against Iran without actually firing a shot. But this time the House and Senate conferees are going further than that. The report contains language that pushes the US as close to an actual authorization for the use of force against Iran as we can get. The Report “…asserts that the U.S. should be prepared to take all necessary measures, including military action if required, to prevent Iran from threatening the U.S., its allies, or Iran’s neighbors with a nuclear weapon and reinforces the military option should it prove necessary.”

This kind of language just emboldens Iran’s enemies in the region to engage in increasingly reckless behavior with the guarantee that the US military will step in if they push it too far. That is an unwise move for everyone concerned.

This Conference Report contains increased levels of foreign military aid, including an additional half-billion dollars in missile assistance to an already prosperous Israel and some $300 million to help an increasingly prosperous Russia control its chemical, nuclear, and biological weapons. And Russia does not even want the money!

Overall, this authorization will give the president even more money for military activities next year than he requested. At a time when the news has been dominated by reports of our budget crisis, the “fiscal cliff,” and the “need” to increase taxes on Americans, Congress is foolishly spending even more on the military budget than the administration wants! I suppose that is what counts as a reduction in the language of Washington.

I urge my colleagues to oppose this, and all future, reckless and dangerous military spending bills that are destroying our national security by destroying our economy.””
